The short answer: yes, you can mount a TV on plasterboard — but never into the plasterboard itself. The board alone will not hold a TV. Here's how it's done safely.
Mounting into the studs
Plasterboard is fixed to timber or steel studs, and that's what the bracket must anchor into. Our technicians locate the studs, confirm what's behind the wall (power and water runs included), and fix the bracket with the right hardware for the stud type. Done properly, a stud-mounted bracket will comfortably hold TVs up to 100".
What about brick and stone walls?
Many Adelaide homes — especially older suburbs like Norwood, Prospect and Unley — have solid brick or bluestone walls. These take masonry anchors, which are extremely strong but unforgiving: a mis-drilled hole in stone can't be patched invisibly. It's the wall type where professional installation pays for itself most.
The mistakes we get called to fix
- TVs mounted with plasterboard-only anchors (they pull out — sometimes with a chunk of the wall)
- Brackets fixed to one stud instead of two, so the TV sags to one side
- TVs mounted too high because "that's where the bracket fit", causing neck strain
- Cables drilled through a wall cavity into a plumbing run
Renting? Ask first
If you're in a rental, wall mounting needs your landlord's written consent in SA. A quality bracket install leaves only small, patchable holes when removed.
